The Writing Center, a welcoming space for students seeking help with their writing, is back for its second year of operation. The center was established in 2022 by English teachers Lin Rudder and Kirsten Cleary, and several student tutors. Now, for the 23-24 school year expansion, the Writing Center is coordinated by four English teachers, and led by twenty-four student tutors.
Prior to the Writing Center’s launch on October 4, the student tutors were required to go through a month-long training process.
“A lot of us knew about the Writing Center, but we didn’t know about the work that goes into it,” said junior Sreeja Sambhuni, one of the new tutors.
“It was a bootcamp process for soft skills, like greeting customers, being polite, mixing in compliments with areas of growth, while also building their skill set in things like their thesis and finding evidence,” said Cleary, Writing Center coordinator.
Additionally, the tutors went through rubrics for subjects like AP English Language and AP English Literature and Composition to provide students with feedback that caters to a specific style that they will have to write in for certain courses.
Some changes have been made to the Writing Center since its original opening in 2022. Now located in room 1420, it is hard to miss, and offers more space for more students to stop by. The Writing Center has new hours as well. For synchronous help, students can visit during blocks 2, 4, 6, 8, or during their lunch shifts. To receive feedback asynchronously, students can fill out this form.
“Honestly, we all hope that the Writing Center can be a safe space where writers feel comfortable sharing their work,” said Sambhuni. “Sharing your writing is vulnerable, so I think it’s nice that there’s a place in the school for students to do that.”

Classes are starting to require going to the writing center, and it’s quite frankly annoying as someone who doesn’t even need it. Being open on only even blocks is ridiculous because many people have study hall (which, by the way, complete waste of time) on odd blocks. I had to skip lunch one time because of the writing center
