The week of December 4, Lightridge’s National Art Honor Society (NAHS) and Family, Career, and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA) club collaborated to create this year’s annual NAHS fundraiser: Prints and Pastries. Students from NAHS created art prints while students from FCCLA made food items, including croissants and gingerbread cookies. Art prints were $1 each, $3 with a gingerbread cookie and $5 with a croissant.
“The president from last year started this fundraiser tradition, since it was the first year of NAHS,” said Ayla Warren, current President of NAHS and member of FCCLA. “We donated to the Wanda Alston Foundation, which is an organization for LGBTQ homeless youth in DC. This year, we had three fundraisers to pick from, and NAHS voted for Islamic Relief USA, for humanitarian aid in Gaza.”
The planning for this fundraiser began mid-October. Since the members from two clubs do not meet, Warren communicated back and forth between Kelsy Zaremski, FCCLA sponsor, and Jim Haller, NAHS sponsor, to finalize things such as the art prints and cost of food.
“Ms. Zaremski decided that FCCLA would donate their funds to help with the cost of the food,” Warren explained. “That way, we could donate all of our proceeds to the organization.”
The fundraiser ended up being a success, with many returning customers, and a total of $784 raised.
“We definitely wanted to make a change, and I hope that next year’s leadership continues to keep this an annual event,” Warren said.
