The 58th Super Bowl took place in Las Vegas on February 11. While the Super Bowl is officially a football game, many viewers only tune in during halftime for what has become an increasingly elaborate musical spectacle.
Ever since the inaugural event in 1967, music has played an important role, with college marching bands performing at the first halftime. By the 1990s, the halftime entertainment had evolved and popular artists were being offered the musical spot. Since then, performing at the Super Bowl has been seen as a sign that an artist has achieved super fame, with legends such as Prince, Michael Jackson and Beyoncé taking mid-field.
This year the musical performer was Usher. Usher has a career spanning decades. His songs have been featured in movies, commercials, nine have reached the top spot on the Billboard Hot 100, and have been the soundtrack of many peoples’ lives.
Usher’s halftime performance was one of a kind. Many predictions suggested Usher would open with his hit “Yeah!” Instead he opened up with “Caught Up”.
His performance ranged from fast paced songs to slow ballads. One of the stand out songs of the performance was, “My Boo.” A duet with Alicia Keys, the song is a ballad about first love. Both Usher and Keys showed fans the art of performing, playing off of each other’s voice and chemistry.
Alicia Keys was not the only guest that was featured in the performance. H.E.R, had an amazing guitar solo, additionally will.i.am, Ludacris, Lil Jon, and Jermaine Dupri all had roles.
One of the most unique aspects of the performance was when Usher appeared on roller skates.
“It was super iconic with the roller skates,” said junior Kennedy Ricks. “ He went above and beyond.”
Usher’s halftime performance is one of the most watched halftime shows and should be remembered for years to come.
