The Lightridge Writing Center (LWC) has made new changes to the structure of the organization for the 24-25 school year. One of these additions is the introduction of LWC committees. These have been created to improve the efficiency of the writing center in all aspects. The committees include Advertising and Community Outreach, Tutor Support, Data and Logistics, and Communications.
The advertising and community outreach committee focuses on marketing material for LWC. This includes advertisements, social media posts, and seasonal window display updates.
The tutor support committee is responsible for organizing outreach with local writing centers and providing general support to LWC’s tutors.
The data and logistics committee works closely with LWC sponsors to analyze monthly data and write grant applications to provide crucial funds for the center.
The communications committee will be partnering with Lightridge News to publish a monthly “Write Right” column, of which this piece is the first installment. The column will cover a wide variety of topics, such as information about the LWC, tips/tricks to improve student writing, and stories from Lightridge’s student writers.
One of the challenges in instating these new committees has been getting the students together across blocks. The makeup of the committee itself includes 2-3 directors who must figure out a unique way to delegate tasks and communicate with their committee members who are scattered throughout the four LWC blocks. To fix this issue, Lin Rudder and Kirsten Cleary, sponsors of LWC, made a “Committee Communication Document” that allows directors to write their plans for the year and members to make comments on these goals.
Another challenge has been figuring out a way to connect with the Lightridge community. So far, the LWC has brainstormed several ideas: including interactive displays, social media posts, and surveys, which will be implemented in the coming months.
Write Right is a monthly column produced by the Lightridge Writing Center in cooperation with lightridgenews.com.
