We have arrived at that time of year again when every student, no matter their grade, seems to have senioritis. Students are trapped in the limbo of not learning anything new, but having final exams and projects. While it might seem unnecessary to actually show up to school, you should.
When I was an underclassman senior year seemed like it was so far away, but now as a senior everything is moving so fast. Everything exists in its finality, and at the same time so many things are just beginning to start.
For so much of high school we are obsessed with passing the time until we graduate. However, it is not until graduation looms closer that there is the realization that four years goes by super quickly. If you’re anything like me, high school always seemed to be preparing you for the future. You took classes that would help you in college. You joined clubs that would prepare you for your major. Well, somewhere in between group projects and presentations we grew up. Then it hits, the preparation part is over, the only thing left to do is to actually do it.
One thing high school has taught me is that the best memories are formed in the mundane. The inside jokes that make you laugh so hard you can barely breath will be created during a random day in class. You’ll meet who will become your best friend during what would otherwise be an uneventful lunch. If you do not pay attention you’ll miss it.
I understand how challenging it can be to show up sometimes. It can be overwhelming to juggle what seems like a million assignments and have to figure out what you want your future to look like. However, this is exactly why you show up. High school provides you with a community of peers that are having the same experiences as you at the same time. High school also helps you figure out what you enjoy doing or in many cases what you despise doing.
High school is definitely what you make of it, but you can’t make something of it if you don’t show up. So, don’t be afraid to try something new. High school is way too short to be self conscious about everything you do.
