For the 2024-2025 school year, a new, modified FLEX rotation schedule has been implemented.
Now, the classroom a student goes to during FLEX depends on both the day of the week and the alternating weekly schedule. On Mondays, students either go to their Block 1 and Block 5 teachers, while on Tuesdays they go to Block 2 or Block 6 teachers. Thursdays follow a similar pattern with Block 3 or Block 7 teachers, and Fridays with Block 4 or Block 8 teachers. On Wednesdays, however, all students meet with their advisory teacher.
This differs greatly from last year’s schedule, where students met with their advisory teachers two times a week.
The order of lunch and FLEX depends on the location of the classroom. If a student’s assigned FLEX classroom is upstairs, they attend FLEX first, followed by lunch. If the classroom is downstairs, students go to lunch first and then to FLEX. This comes with the exception of Fine Arts classrooms: students that are assigned here still attend lunch first. Wednesdays are slightly different: 9th and 10th graders go to lunch first and then advisory, while 11th and 12th graders attend advisory first, followed by lunch.
“This gives students an extra opportunity to meet with their teachers, to catch up on all work, to review, to remediate, retake tests, that sort of thing,” said Jake Johnson, Student Activities and Engagement Coordinator.
Club meetings will be included during this time once Quarter 2 begins. But this year, students will need to get permission from their flex block teacher before attending their club meeting, unlike last year, where students could go to their meetings directly. Things like missing assignments, tests to make up, and additional practice could affect a teacher’s decision on letting a student attend their club meeting.
“The big thing with this new schedule is prioritizing academics over the extracurriculars,” said Johnson. “Why do we come to school in the first place? For an education. Everything beyond that will come naturally once the first priority is taken care of.”
Students have expressed their confusion about the changes.
“I feel like we have a new bell schedule every year,” said senior Saanvi Sadu. “It’s definitely way more confusing this year, but I think I’ll get used to it as the year goes on.”
