On October 11, the Lightridge Marching Storm traveled to the US Naval Academy in Annapolis Maryland. The Marching Storm is known for its elaborate shows and music. Lesser known, however, is the work and dedication of the Lightridge Color Guard.
Color guard is a team of people who perform choreographed dances and routines. The Lightridge Color Guard, which consists of 28 members, was founded along with the school’s inception. The guard also has the added aspect of being a part of the marching band during the fall, and then in the winter/spring the color guard becomes its own separate entity that goes to color guard specific competitions around the DMV area.
“We have rehearsals every single week, three days a week at least, and even more when we have a competition that weekend,” said junior member Kayla Nartey.
For the US Naval Academy competition, the preparation process for the guard members was very standardized.
“We usually come to school a few hours beforehand to get ready,” said Junior Alyssa Robinson. “We have a rehearsal, do our makeup and hair, and then warm up before performing. It’s a mix of nerves and excitement every time.”
The Marching Storm ended up earning 4th-Class V Open at the US Naval Academy, and earned high scores in the color guard category of the competition.
“Although we have had our ups and downs, overall together we are doing well competitively and showing our skills as a team,” Nartey said
While the marching band season enters its final stretch, the color guard hopes to close out the season well and begin preparing for winter guard season which begins November 10.
“I’m excited for the winter guard season, especially with the growth and bond the team has,” said Junior guard member Brynna Deno.
