Swimming districts are coming up and the Lightridge swim team is in a very strong position.

Coach Katie Johnson explained that in order to qualify for districts a swimmer has to be within the top three on the team in an event. There are ten different events, but swimmers are only permitted to participate in two events. Combining the boys and girls swimmers the team has about forty two members, a significant number who have qualified for the district meet.

Johnson has coached the team since Lightridge has opened, and the team has gone to districts all three years.

“The team has been growing in the number of state qualifiers each year,” said Johnson.   “This season the team has about six state qualifiers, but that number could go up.”

Johnson’s passion is clear when she explains why she loves swimming.

“I really like the community that grows on swim teams and the fact that it’s an individual sport and also a team sport at the same time,” said Johnson. “Kids are swimming for their best times to improve their own records but then they are also swimming to score points for their team. It’s a really good team environment.”

This year districts will be held at Claude Moore Recreation Center, in Sterling on February 4th.
