Gordon Parks by Vanya Angara “For the batik project, I chose Gordon Parks because he was an earnest and dedicated person as a photographer, film director, author, civil rights activist, etc. He was an admiring person and he really helped give voice to certain important issues like civil rights, poverty, and race relations. During the project, the most challenging aspect of it was trying to paint the wax properly onto the fabric. The wax would spread very rapidly on the fabric and dry very quickly, therefore making it hard to put it in the right places and making the portrait look odd. My portrait came out very odd-looking because I kept putting wax onto the wrong places and I couldn't undo it. Overall, I enjoyed this project as it gave relevance to black history month and it gave me a chance to try something new. I haven't really done anything artistic with fabric before, so this project really gave me a chance to do that exact thing while letting me have fun with it as well.”
