Prom night is often remembered for all of its glamour; the decorations, dresses, and dates. But what most people don’t see is everything that goes behind the glamour. For juniors in SCA, prom is less about the elegance and more about all of the planning that goes into prom.
Every year, the junior SCA class is tasked with planning and setting up the prom. This task is not taken lightly, due to the fact that there is over 800 juniors and seniors at Lightridge
“We started planning all the way back in the fall, and that’s when we started brainstorming ideas for the prom theme,” said Junior Vice President Lizzie Yang.
After settling on “All Bets Are Off: An Evening at the Jazz Club,” the juniors went into brainstorming mode.
“In order to plan properly for prom we created a slideshow that contained all of the ideas we had for each room,” said junior class member Anvitha Voleti. “It was very complex and took a lot of communication between all of us members”
After finding all of the decorations online, the 25 person 2027 SCA class had to split into different groups, each group focusing on a different part of the prom process.
“There were five groups: Advertising, ballroom/private hallway, second ballroom/public hallway, and product creation,“ said Yang. “We spent a lot of time with these groups figuring out the cohesive theme for the advertisements/print materials, decorations, and activities we had at Prom.”
All of this started after winter break, almost five months before the actual prom took place. The topic discussion and initial planning started even earlier.
At the one month mark, SCA had to truly focus on prom work.
“Everyday that week [April 26-May 2] was dedicated to finishing the final preparation for prom, even staying after school to finish work,” said Voleti.
All of this planning makes the normal prom experience a little different for the junior SCA members.
“We spent a lot of time setting up on the weekend, but I think it was worth it as we were able to put on an unforgettable prom for the school,” said Junior class member Nadira Aleem.
