Hockey skates into playoffs

The Lightridge Ice Hockey team is currently one of the best teams in the Northern Virginia, sitting in second place in their Northern Virginia Scholastic Hockey League division.

John Champe High school is generally considered to be one of Lightridge’s biggest rivals. However, the two schools have put aside the rivalry to form a joint ice hockey team. The Lightridge/John Champe varsity hockey team, established in January of 2021, is made up of players from both schools and is coached by Rick Harrison Every weekend, usually after 9pm, they play at the Ashburn Ice House,the Haymarket Iceplex or the Medstar Caps Iceplex.

In the first game of the season the team played Gainesville and achieved a shutout victory with a 6-0 final score. During the rest of the season they beat Fauquier/Patriot , Battlefield, Riverside, and Kettle Run/Rappahannock finishing with a final record of 5-4-1, despite dropping three of their last four contests.

The division was a competitive one, with junior Lexi Rapp, who plays Left Wing for the team, saying that “the rivalries” ‘ were by far the biggest challenge of the season.

The team now advances to the playoffs, beginning in March where they will face Chantilly/Mclean whose most recent win was a 12-2 victory over Heritage/Rock Ridge.
