On October 24, varsity football traveled down Braddock Road to play John Champe High School in the biggest rivalry game of the season. The final score of the game was 23-3 with Champe pulling out the win.
The team spent the week prior to the game prepping.
“We do tend to have a lot of speed at positions that other teams don’t,” said varsity football Head Coach Robert Eavenson. “We’ve been able to generate a lot of pressure on opposing quarterbacks.”
Champe plays a very fast-paced game and they are very quick to start plays. Lightridge coach Tony Rozzoni runs the scout team, which are players who match the opposing team’s plays and style to get the first string defense and offense ready.
“He’s giving them a couple plays at a time and they’re running it really fast and they’re really putting a lot of stress on the defense,” said Eavenson.
Although the game didn’t go the way Lightridge wanted it to, a highlight included getting an interception after halftime.
“I don’t think anyone gave up, everyone played with serious effort and you got to applaud them for that,” said senior Linebacker Luke Ducic,h who shared that Lightridge is working to fix their mental errors going forward.
“Our guys have the skill, they have the athleticism – I think most people can recognize that; when we can combine that with focus and teamwork, it shows,” said Ducich.
