Lunch is my time to breathe and pause, but lately I’ve felt like I’m racing against the clock. With only two lunch periods and hundreds of students, it’s a challenge to find a seat when the cafeteria fills up so quickly, and honestly, the lunch lines take forever with people shoving and skipping ahead. It’s hard to relax when you’re constantly checking the time or searching for a place to eat.
The crowding situation affects everyone, including both staff and students like me. I’ve had many days where I had to rush to finish my meal before the bell rings, and trust me, I am not a slow eater. On some days, I’ve wandered all around the cafeteria just so I could find a comfortable seat but it’s almost impossible to find one with so many students packed in at once.
“I’m not able to get my lunch quickly, and there aren’t many spots to sit at,” said sophomore Noor Khan.
In Loudoun County, different high schools have different lunch setups. Some have four lunch periods, while others have two. However, some of the schools with four lunch periods actually have fewer students than Lightridge. What’s interesting is that Lightridge used to have four lunch periods just two years ago, but that setup was cut down to two. Given how crowded and stressful lunch has become, it might be time for Lightridge to bring back the four-lunch system.
With more than 2,150 students, the hallways and cafeteria are always packed during lunchtime, leading to bigger issues aside from the stress and noise. This particularly affects student safety and supervision. The teachers and staff do their best to keep things under control, but with that many students and a crowded place, it’s hard for them to manage everything at once.
“I think adding one or more lunch periods would help because we won’t be crowding in one place, and we’ll be scattered around several places. So there’ll be more seating for everyone,” said freshman Aadya Hora.
Another reason why changing the lunch setup is a good idea is that students don’t get enough time to eat or take a break properly, which negatively impacts their ability to focus and concentrate for the rest of the day.
Adding one or more lunch periods would make a huge difference. We all know this change couldn’t happen right away and that it would require time and effort to adjust the schedule, but if it makes lunch less stressful for everyone, it’s totally worth it. If these changes were made, lunch would finally be what it’s supposed to be. Lunch shouldn’t feel like a race. It should feel like a break everyone deserves.
